Speed Limit Changes Approved By County Commission
Changes to speed limits along three local roadways have been approved by county leaders.
On Tuesday members of the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners voted to approve speed limit changes on Ingram and Overneck Roads and Cherokee Hills Drive.
The new speed limit on Ingram Road is 35 mph, Overneck Road is 30 mph, and Cherokee Hills Drive is 25 mph.
Although the resolution originally called for installation of “Children at Play” signs on Ingram Road, that resolution was amended to eliminate that clause. Commissioner Denny Gillespie pointed out that erecting the signs could lead to liability issues for the county. “If you start hanging those signs and someone steals them and a child gets hurt, the county is at fault.”
Commissioner Chris Jackson agreed, adding, “Donnie (Superintendent of Roads Donnie Joe Brown) quit putting up those signs several years ago.”
The portion of the resolution regarding the “Children at Play” signage was removed and commissioners voted to approve the change in speed limit only.
